This is the first issue of Sidestreet Signal, and the premise is simple. Every month brings a pile of platform announcements, most of which don't matter to a business in the Upstate. A few of them do. This is where we pull those out, say plainly what changed, and pair each one with something you can actually do about it.
This month: Meta is rewarding original content, WordPress shipped a security fix you need to confirm landed, Adobe removed a chunk of mechanical work from production, and a survey of 1,800 journalists shows newsrooms still lean on prepared sources. Four shifts, four moves.
Four shifts
worth your attention.
Original content is getting more weight
Meta says original posts accounted for 75% of Instagram recommendations in the U.S. by the end of 2025, while Facebook's ranking improvements increased views of organic feed and video posts. The platforms are signaling a preference for work that adds something new.
For a small marketing team, this is good news dressed up as a warning. The recycled quote graphic and the stock-photo tip post were never going to build a business anyway. What the algorithm now rewards is the thing you already have and your competitors can't copy: what your people see on the job, what customers actually ask, and the results you can point to.
The takeaway: Build social content from what your team actually sees, knows, and can prove, not from recycled filler.
WordPress released an urgent security update
WordPress 7.0.2, released July 17, addresses one critical and one high-severity security issue. WordPress enabled forced automatic updates for affected versions, but site owners should still verify that the update completed and that backups and monitoring are healthy.
"Forced automatic update" sounds like the problem handled itself. Often it did. But auto-updates fail quietly on sites with locked file permissions, expired hosting plans, disabled cron, or a plugin that conflicts with the core change. The only way to know your site is on 7.0.2 is for someone to look.
The takeaway: Website maintenance is an operating function, not a task to revisit only when something breaks.
Creative tools are cutting more production friction
Adobe's June Creative Cloud updates expanded Lightroom's culling and editing workflow, added photo-to-video capabilities, and introduced new tools across Premiere and After Effects. More of the mechanical work can now happen inside the core creative workflow.
Culling 2,000 event photos down to 80 used to eat an afternoon. Masking a subject frame by frame used to eat a day. That time is coming back, and the question for a client is where it goes. The right answer is into the parts a tool can't judge: which moment tells the story, where the cut lands, whether the final frame feels like your brand.
The takeaway: Use automation to accelerate selects, masks, and adaptations, then keep human judgment on the story, pacing, and final frame.
Newsrooms still need useful, prepared sources
In Cision's 2026 survey of more than 1,800 journalists, 66% said they rely on PR-provided content, including pitches, releases, and media kits, for story ideas. Under-resourced newsrooms still value organizations that make credible information easier to use.
Having spent a couple of decades in those newsrooms, this matches what we see. A producer with four stories to fill and two hours to do it will take the pitch that arrives with a real angle, a spokesperson who can talk today, a fact sheet, and clean B-roll. The generic announcement with a phone number goes to the bottom of the pile.
The takeaway: A timely pitch with evidence, expert access, and usable assets beats a generic announcement.
Own the source.
Keep it current.
Make it useful.
Four useful
moves for this month
Give your social calendar an originality check.
Review the next four posts. Each should add an observation, useful answer, point of view, or piece of evidence that only your organization could provide.
Confirm your website's maintenance loop.
Make sure updates, backups, uptime monitoring, security checks, and rollback plans have a clear owner, and that someone has verified them recently.
Capture once, plan for many formats.
At the next shoot, gather horizontal and vertical footage, stills, room tone, short interviews, and clean B-roll so one production day can support multiple channels.
Build a ready-to-send media folder.
Keep current leadership bios, approved headshots, logos, a fact sheet, image captions, spokesperson contact information, and evergreen B-roll in one place.

WordPress 7.0.2, released July 17, 2026, addressed one critical and one high-severity security issue. WordPress pushed forced automatic updates to affected versions, but automatic updates can fail quietly on sites with restrictive file permissions, disabled cron, hosting issues or plugin conflicts. Log in and confirm your site is on 7.0.2 or later, check that your most recent backup completed, and make sure uptime and security monitoring are actually running.
Meta reported that original posts made up 75% of Instagram recommendations in the U.S. by the end of 2025, and that Facebook's ranking changes increased views of organic feed and video posts. In plain terms, recycled graphics and generic tips get less reach, while posts built from what your team actually sees, knows and can prove get more. For a small business that's an advantage, because your first-hand knowledge is the one thing a competitor can't copy.
Cision's 2026 survey of more than 1,800 journalists found 66% rely on PR-provided content, including pitches, releases and media kits, for story ideas. What gets used is the pitch that arrives with a real angle, evidence, a spokesperson who is available quickly, and ready assets like a fact sheet, headshots and B-roll. Generic announcements without any of that tend to get ignored.
Current leadership bios, approved headshots, logo files, a one-page fact sheet, image captions, spokesperson contact information, and evergreen B-roll, all kept in one shared folder that can be sent the same hour a reporter asks. The value is speed: a newsroom on deadline will use the source that makes its job easiest.
Capture once and plan for many formats. Gather horizontal and vertical footage, still photos, room tone, short interview clips and clean B-roll in the same session, so a single day of production can feed the website, social channels, ads, a press kit and internal use without a second shoot.
